Should You Buy Methylene Blue Powder at All?

Powder makes sense for a small group of buyers: people who already know the serving they want, own the kit to mix and measure accurately, and want the lowest possible cost over many months. For everyone else, the savings come with real friction.

• You still have to make a liquid. A useful serving is a few milligrams, far too small to scoop. The sellers’ own directions turn 1 g of powder into 100 mL of 1% solution, which holds 10 mg per mL.
• Your drops won’t match ours. “0.5 mg per drop” only holds for a dropper that delivers 20 drops per mL. A different dropper gives a different drop size. If you mix your own, measure by volume with an oral syringe rather than counting drops.
• It stains, and it irritates. Heiltropfen’s listing warns that the powder may cause skin, respiratory and eye irritation and tells buyers to wear gloves, protective clothing and eye protection. Other powder listings carry similar handling notes.
• Most powders are sold as lab chemicals. Every powder listing we checked on Amazon sits under Lab Chemicals in Industrial & Scientific. Of the three powders we rank, only UFCBIO lists the medicines and conditions to check with a professional first.

A 50 mL bottle holds 500 mg for $29.99, so a 5 mg serving (10 drops) costs about $0.30.

Testing you can read: the product page links a report from Contract Testing Laboratories of America (CTLA) on the methylene blue ingredient, with an HPLC identity result of “Conforms” and individual results for arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. It covers the raw ingredient only. It does not give a purity percentage, finished-product potency or a result for every batch, and we say so on the page.

Warnings on the label: not with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medicines, not with G6PD deficiency, not in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, not under 18, and talk to your doctor if you take any prescription medicine. Do not exceed the suggested serving.

#2. UFCBIO Methylene Blue Powder, USP/Pharma Grade: Best Powder

UFCBIO sells its USP powder in amber glass vials: 1 g for $12.50 or 5 g for $29.99. The page says a certificate of analysis and a safety data sheet are available. Its directions are to add 1 g of powder to 100 mL of water and shake well.

It is also the only powder here whose page lists who should check with a healthcare professional before personal use: people on antidepressants (particularly SSRIs or MAOIs), people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and people with G6PD deficiency. The 1 g vial is a sensible size for a first powder purchase, since it makes one 100 mL bottle of 1% solution.

What to weigh: the certificate is “available” rather than posted on the product page, so ask for it before you mix. You supply the water, the bottle and the measuring syringe. UFCBIO also sells lab reagents and offers wholesale supply.

Who it suits: buyers set on powder who want a stated grade, paperwork on request and a small first size.

#3. Heiltropfen Methylene Blue Powder: Lowest Price per Gram

Heiltropfen’s 25 g pouch of USP methylene blue trihydrate is $34.70 on Amazon, or $1.39 a gram, the lowest price per gram here. A 10 g size is $25.70. A measuring scoop is included: one level scoop holds 0.2 g, and five scoops in 100 mL of distilled water make a 1% solution. The 25 g pouch is enough for 2.5 liters of it.

The listing says the powder is tested by a third party for heavy metals, that the analysis is provided on request, and that more quality documents appear further down the listing. It had 4.6 out of 5 stars from 45 ratings when we checked.

What to weigh: 2.5 liters of 1% solution is far more than one person needs, and a scoop is less precise than a scale or a pre-weighed vial. The listing warns about skin, eye and respiratory irritation and says to keep it away from children, but it gives no warnings about medicines, G6PD deficiency or pregnancy. It sits in Amazon’s Analytical Reagents category.

Who it suits: experienced buyers who mix in bulk and want the lowest price per gram.

#4. NooBlue Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules: No Measuring at All

If the appeal of powder was control over the amount, capsules are the opposite trade: no control and no work. Each NooBlue capsule holds 5 mg of USP methylene blue and 10 mg of vitamin C, the label says one capsule a day with food, and a bottle of 60 costs $37.99, or $0.63 a day.

Nutricel’s 1% liquid comes in a 4 oz bottle at 10 mg per mL for $30.00, which works out to about 2.5 cents a milligram, cheaper than any other ready-made liquid here. Nutricel says Eurofins tests every batch for purity, identity and heavy metals, with certificates on request.

What to weigh: the page gives no suggested serving and asks you to consult your healthcare provider for the amount. Its warnings say not to take it if you are on SSRIs, pregnant or nursing, and not for children, but we found no G6PD warning. Nutricel ships only to US addresses. #6. Biopharm Methylene Blue 1% USP: A Plain Lab-Supplier Solution

Biopharm’s 1% USP solution gives 0.5 mg per drop. The 50 mL glass bottle with dropper is $25.97, about $0.05 per milligram, and a current offer gives two 50 mL glass bottles for the same price. Biopharm says its methylene blue gets extra testing from third-party analysts.

#7. HXOGYUB Methylene Blue Powder Kit: Pre-Weighed 1 g Portions

This Amazon kit contains eight bottles, each holding 1 g of powder, plus a measuring cup and a funnel. You add distilled water to a bottle to make 100 mL of 1% solution, so there is no weighing. It costs $32.99 for 8 g, about $4.12 a gram, and had 4.2 out of 5 stars from 85 ratings when we checked.

What to weigh: the listing makes health claims for the powder, including one about a named medical condition, that go well beyond the published evidence. It gives no warnings about medicines, G6PD deficiency or pregnancy, and Amazon lists it under Inorganic Reagents.

Who it suits: powder buyers who want pre-portioned 1 g vials and no scale.

#8. Meraki Blu USP Grade Methylene Blue: The Smallest Drop-by-Drop Steps

Meraki Blu has 150 mg of methylene blue in 30 mL, about 0.25 mg per drop, half the strength of a 1% solution. That gives the smallest steps of any liquid here: the page suggests beginners start with 1 to 3 drops a day. One bottle is $35.00 ($0.23 per milligram), two are $65 and three are $89.

Making a 1% Methylene Blue Solution From Powder: The Math and the Pitfalls

Every powder seller above gives the same recipe, so the arithmetic is simple:

• 1 g of powder in 100 mL of water makes a 1% solution. That is 1,000 mg in 100 mL, or 10 mg in every mL.
• At 1%, 0.5 mL holds 5 mg. A 1 mL oral syringe marked in 0.1 mL steps lets you measure 1 mg at a time.
• Drops are only a rough guide. The “0.5 mg per drop” figure assumes 20 drops per mL. Your dropper may differ.

The pitfalls are practical. Use distilled or demineralized water, as Heiltropfen and HXOGYUB direct. Shake until no powder is left, because undissolved grains mean an uneven strength. Store the result tightly closed, away from heat and sunlight, in a bottle labelled with its strength and the date. Keep both the powder and the solution well out of reach of children. What to Check Before You Buy Any Methylene Blue

“USP grade” means the ingredient meets the United States Pharmacopeia monograph for methylene blue: not less than 97.0% and not more than 103.0% methylene blue, calculated on the dried basis. Label figures like 99% or 99.9% are the seller’s own claims, so ask which lot and which test they come from. 1. Is it sold for people to take? Look for directions and a warnings panel. A lab-chemical category or a “research only” line tells you how the seller sees the product.

Why the Amount Matters: What the Research Says

Powder makes it easy to get the amount wrong, and with methylene blue more is not simply better. In a 2004 rat study in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, Callaway and colleagues found that low concentrations of methylene blue increased brain cytochrome c oxidation in lab tests while high concentrations did not. Rats given 1 mg/kg after maze training visited the correct holes 66% of the time in memory probe trials, against 31% for saline controls. Rat results do not tell us what happens in people.

The best-known human study, Rodriguez and colleagues’ 2016 trial in Radiology, gave 26 healthy adults either a single oral 280 mg dose (about 4 mg/kg) or a placebo, 13 in each group. An hour later, scans showed more brain activity during attention and short-term memory tasks, and correct memory answers rose by 7%. That was one large dose in a small group. Safety: Read Before You Buy Methylene Blue in Any Form

• Not with serotonergic medicines. Do not take methylene blue if you take an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI or any other serotonergic medicine, including many antidepressants. The combination can cause serotonin syndrome.
• Not with G6PD deficiency. Methylene blue can damage red blood cells in people with this inherited enzyme deficiency.
• Not in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and not for anyone under 18.
• Expect blue or green urine. It is a normal effect with any form of methylene blue.
• Talk to your doctor first if you take any prescription medicine or have a kidney or liver condition.
• Handle powder with care. It stains skin and surfaces, and at least one seller warns of skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Store it where children cannot reach it.
