Quick answer
Our pick for the best caffeine-free focus supplement is NooBlue Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules: 5 mg of USP-grade methylene blue with 10 mg of vitamin C, 60 capsules for $37.99, which works out to $0.63 a day. NooBlue makes it. It is the only product here that works as an electron carrier inside the mitochondrial energy chain, and its human evidence is still small, so we say exactly what has and has not been shown.
- Best all-in-one stack with a published formula trial: Mind Lab Pro, $69.00 for 30 servings ($2.30 a serving).
- Branded stack with two published trials: Onnit Alpha BRAIN, $57.95 for a 30-day supply.
- Lowest cost per serving: Jarrow Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg, $0.32 a capsule in the 120-count bottle.
- Before you buy: methylene blue is not for anyone taking serotonergic antidepressants or stimulant ADHD medication, anyone with G6PD deficiency, or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
Caffeine works, but plenty of people want a way to focus that does not come with jitters, a 3 PM slump or a bad night’s sleep. Caffeine-free nootropics take other routes: some feed the brain’s acetylcholine system, some are adaptogens aimed at stress-related tiredness, and one, methylene blue, supports the energy chain inside mitochondria. This guide compares eight products that contain no caffeine, using each brand’s own label and price page as of Sep 2026, and it sets out the human research behind each main ingredient.
NooBlue makes methylene blue capsules, gummies and drops. Our capsules are our pick at #1, and we have a commercial interest in that choice. Every figure for the other seven products comes from their own product pages, and where a claim could not be checked we left it out. We have not lab-tested any competitor product.

#1. NooBlue Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules: Our Pick
Most caffeine-free focus formulas work on neurotransmitters. Methylene blue works one level down. At low doses it acts as an electron cycler in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, accepting electrons and passing them on to cytochrome oxidase, the enzyme that uses oxygen at the end of the chain. A 2012 review in Progress in Neurobiology by Rojas, Bruchey and Gonzalez-Lima concluded that the available data support a major role for cytochrome oxidase in its memory-enhancing effects, and it stressed a hormetic dose response: low and high doses have opposite effects (Rojas et al., 2012).
The best human evidence is one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Radiology in 2016. Twenty-six healthy adults took a single oral dose of methylene blue or placebo, and one hour later methylene blue had increased brain activity during a sustained-attention task and a short-term memory task. It was also associated with a 7% increase in correct memory-retrieval responses (Rodriguez et al., 2016). That trial used 280 mg, about 56 times one of our capsules. No study has tested 5 mg for focus, so the honest case for our capsules rests on the mechanism, a low fixed dose and clean manufacturing rather than on a trial of this product.
Why it is still our pick: it is the only product here that supports the energy chain directly, it contains no stimulant, and each capsule holds a fixed 5 mg with 10 mg of vitamin C in a rice flour and cellulose capsule. Contract Testing Laboratories of America (CTLA) analyzed the methylene blue ingredient, lot 2025022801, recording an HPLC identity result of “Conforms” and individual results for arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. That report covers the raw ingredient, not every finished batch, and it gives no purity percentage. Our quality page links the certificate.
- Label: 5 mg methylene blue USP and 10 mg vitamin C per capsule, 60 capsules, one a day with food.
- Price: $37.99 ($0.63 a capsule). Two bottles save 10%, three save 15%, five save 20%.
- Other formats: gummies with 10 mg methylene blue and 25 mg vitamin C for $49.99, and 1% drops at 0.5 mg per drop for $29.99, or $0.30 per 5 mg serving.
Who it suits: adults who want a low, stimulant-free daily dose that works on cellular energy, and who can check the safety list below. Who it doesn’t: anyone taking SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, opioids or stimulant ADHD medication, anyone with G6PD deficiency, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. It also turns urine blue or green, which is harmless but surprises people. Read who should not take methylene blue before your first bottle.

#2. Mind Lab Pro: Best All-in-One Stack With a Formula Trial
Mind Lab Pro puts 11 caffeine-free ingredients into a 2-capsule serving. The label lists citicoline (as Cognizin) 250 mg, bacopa monnieri 150 mg (24% bacosides), organic lion’s mane (mycelium and fruit) 500 mg, phosphatidylserine 100 mg, N-acetyl L-tyrosine 175 mg, L-theanine 100 mg, rhodiola rosea 50 mg, maritime pine bark extract 75 mg, and vitamins B6, B9 and B12. A one-month bottle costs $69.00, or $2.30 a serving. The label suggests 2 to 4 capsules a day in the morning or early afternoon on an empty stomach.
Its main strength is research on the finished formula. Mind Lab Pro’s site lists three published studies and says two of them were funded by its parent company. The memory study is the most relevant. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study from the University of Leeds, published in Human Psychopharmacology in 2023, 49 healthy adults took Mind Lab Pro or placebo for 30 days. The Mind Lab Pro group improved on all memory subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale, and it differed from placebo on immediate and delayed recall (Abbott-Imboden et al., 2023). The groups were uneven (36 on the supplement, 13 on placebo), allocation was described as pseudo-randomised, and Mind Lab Pro’s own site says the study was funded by its parent company.
Who it suits: people who want one bottle covering several pathways and are happy to pay for it. Who it doesn’t: anyone on a tight budget, and anyone who wants trial-sized doses of each herb. The 50 mg of rhodiola, for example, is far below the 576 mg a day of SHR-5 extract used in a Swedish placebo-controlled trial (Olsson et al., 2009).
#3. Onnit Alpha BRAIN: Branded Stack With Two Published Trials
Onnit Alpha BRAIN is “formulated without caffeine,” according to Onnit. The ingredients it highlights are L-theanine, huperzia serrata extract (which contains huperzine A), vitamin B6, alpha GPC and phosphatidylserine. The 60-count bottle costs $57.95 and Onnit sells it as a 30-day supply at 2 capsules a day, which is $1.93 a serving. Onnit also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. One caution on the name: Onnit’s Alpha BRAIN Black Label is sold as a nootropic with caffeine, so choose the original capsules if caffeine is what you are avoiding (Black Label page).
Alpha BRAIN has two published human trials, and the results are mixed. A randomized, double-blind trial of 63 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 found that 6 weeks of Alpha BRAIN improved delayed verbal recall and executive function compared with placebo (Solomon et al., 2016). A second trial in 43 soldiers, funded by an Onnit grant, found no significant effect on marksmanship, reaction time or accuracy after 30 days (Barringer et al., 2018). Our methylene blue vs Alpha Brain comparison goes into more detail.
Who it suits: people who want a well-known stack with some published evidence. Who it doesn’t: anyone who wants every ingredient amount in the product text, since Onnit’s page highlights ingredients rather than listing doses in its description, and anyone taking medicines that act on acetylcholine, who should ask a doctor first because huperzine A slows acetylcholine breakdown.
#4. Performance Lab Energy: Best Mitochondrial Nutrient Stack
Performance Lab Energy takes the closest route to methylene blue: it supplies nutrients that mitochondria use. Each 2-capsule serving contains acetyl-L-carnitine 500 mg, R-lipoic acid 100 mg, MicroActive CoQ10 100 mg, BioPQQ 10 mg, magnesium 60 mg and BioPerine black pepper extract 2.5 mg. One bottle holds 30 servings and costs $69.00, or $2.30 a serving. The label says to take 2 capsules in the morning before eating, and the brand describes it as caffeine-free and third-party tested.
The difference from methylene blue is worth understanding. CoQ10, PQQ, carnitine and lipoic acid are raw materials and cofactors for energy metabolism, while methylene blue acts as an electron carrier inside the chain itself. We did not find a published trial of the finished Energy formula, so its evidence rests on studies of the individual ingredients. Our methylene blue vs CoQ10 comparison and our roundup of the best CoQ10 supplements cover that ingredient in depth.
Who it suits: people who feel physically flat and want a broad cellular-energy formula. Who it doesn’t: anyone looking for a focus-specific formula, since it has no choline source, bacopa or other ingredient aimed at attention.
#5. NooCube Brain Productivity: Longest Money-Back Window
NooCube Brain Productivity is a 12-ingredient, caffeine-free formula taken as 2 capsules a day. The amounts NooCube publishes include bacopa monnieri 250 mg (20% bacosides), L-tyrosine 250 mg, choline from VitaCholine 250 mg, L-theanine 100 mg, Panax ginseng concentrate 20 mg and Lutemax 2020, a marigold extract with lutein and zeaxanthin. A one-month bottle of 60 capsules is $64.99 as a single purchase, or $2.17 a serving, and the 5-month pack is $194.99. NooCube offers a 60-day money-back guarantee, the longest here.
The bacopa dose is the formula’s strongest point. A meta-analysis of nine trials found that standardized bacopa extract taken for at least 12 weeks improved speed of attention on some tests (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). The weakness is evidence for the finished product: the only PubMed paper we found that names NooCube is a lab-dish study, not a human trial.
Who it suits: people who want bacopa near a studied dose plus a long refund window. Who it doesn’t: anyone expecting a quick lift, since bacopa’s effects in trials built over weeks.
#6. Real Mushrooms Organic Lion’s Mane: Best Single Mushroom Extract
Real Mushrooms Organic Lion’s Mane Extract Capsules contain a hot-water extract of lion’s mane fruiting bodies only, with no mycelium grown on grain. The brand guarantees more than 30% beta-glucans and describes the product as organic and third-party tested. A serving is 2 capsules (1,000 mg). The 120-capsule bottle costs $34.95 for 60 servings, or $0.58 a serving, and the 300-capsule bottle costs $69.95.
Human evidence in healthy people is early. In a 2023 pilot trial, 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45 took 1.8 g of lion’s mane or placebo. After a single dose they were quicker on the Stroop task at 60 minutes, and after 28 days there was a trend toward lower stress, alongside null and some negative results (Docherty et al., 2023). A 2025 crossover study in 18 young adults found no overall effect of a single 3 g dose of extract on cognition or mood (Surendran et al., 2025).
Who it suits: people who prefer a single mushroom ingredient with a stated beta-glucan level. Who it doesn’t: anyone who wants a noticeable effect on a busy day, since the healthy-adult trials are small and mixed.
#7. NOW Foods Rhodiola 500 mg: Best for Stress-Linked Tiredness
NOW Foods Rhodiola 500 mg supplies 500 mg of rhodiola root extract per veg capsule, standardized to at least 3% total rosavins and at least 1% salidroside. NOW lists the 60-capsule bottle at $36.99, which is $0.62 a capsule, and suggests 1 capsule once or twice daily on an empty stomach.
Rhodiola is an adaptogen, and its best case is focus that slips under stress. A systematic review of 11 placebo-controlled trials concluded that rhodiola may benefit physical and mental performance, but it noted a lack of independent replication of the individual studies (Hung et al., 2011).
Who it suits: people whose focus drops when stress and poor sleep pile up. Who it doesn’t: anyone who wants a broad nootropic, since this is a single herb.
#8. Jarrow Formulas Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg: Lowest Cost per Serving
Jarrow Formulas Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg is the simplest product here: 500 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine per veggie capsule. The 60-count bottle costs $22.99 and the 120-count bottle costs $37.99, which is $0.32 a capsule and the lowest cost per serving in this comparison. Jarrow suggests 1 capsule once or twice a day on an empty stomach.
Acetyl-L-carnitine carries fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production. Its thinking-related evidence comes mainly from older adults with early memory decline: a meta-analysis of trials lasting 3 to 12 months found a small advantage over placebo at 1.5 to 3.0 g a day (Montgomery et al., 2003). One or two Jarrow capsules supply 500 to 1,000 mg, below those trial doses, and the data in healthy younger adults is thin.
Who it suits: budget-minded stack builders who want a cheap mitochondrial nutrient. Who it doesn’t: anyone expecting a noticeable focus effect on its own.
How We Chose and Ranked These Supplements
Every product had to be caffeine-free by its own brand’s description and on sale on the brand’s site in Sep 2026. We dropped a mushroom stack from the older version of this list because its sizes showed as sold out or unavailable on the brand store. For each product we recorded the label amounts, the brand’s one-time price for one bottle, and the cost per serving from the label serving size. We then looked for human trials of the finished formula or its main ingredient.
NooBlue is #1 because we make it and we think the mitochondrial route is a strong caffeine-free option for adults who can take it safely. We have tried to keep everything else about the list factual, including where the evidence for our own product is thin. The order from #2 to #8 reflects how directly each product targets focus, the quality of its published evidence, and cost per serving. It is an editorial judgment from a brand with a stake in the category, not a lab test.
Caffeine-Free Nootropics: What the Main Ingredients Do
Most caffeine-free nootropics lean on a short list of ingredients. Knowing what each one does makes labels much easier to compare.
- Methylene blue: an electron cycler in mitochondria and a reversible MAO-A inhibitor (Ramsay et al., 2007). The main human trial used a single 280 mg dose, far above supplement servings. Our guide to how many mg of methylene blue per day explains low-dose use.
- Citicoline: a choline source for acetylcholine. In a trial of 100 healthy adults aged 50 to 85 with age-related memory complaints, 500 mg a day of Cognizin citicoline for 12 weeks improved episodic memory compared with placebo (Nakazaki et al., 2021).
- Bacopa monnieri: an Ayurvedic herb with the most consistent chronic-use data, mainly on speed of attention after 12 weeks or more.
- Lion’s mane: a mushroom with small, mixed trials in healthy adults.
- Rhodiola: an adaptogen studied for mental performance under stress, with a lack of independent replication.
- Acetyl-L-carnitine, CoQ10, PQQ and lipoic acid: mitochondrial nutrients, studied more for physical energy and in older adults than for focus in healthy people.
- L-theanine and L-tyrosine: amino acids common in stacks. L-theanine is often paired with caffeine, so check the label if you want neither.

Looking for a Neuro Gum Alternative Without Caffeine?
Neuro gum is not caffeine-free. Neuro’s Energy & Focus gum packs 40 mg of natural caffeine plus L-theanine into every piece, and a 54-piece pack costs $24.99 on its own site (Neuro). If you like the convenience but want no caffeine, a caffeine-free Neuro gum alternative from the list above works differently. Nothing here gives the quick lift of caffeine. Methylene blue capsules and gummies are one a day, and Mind Lab Pro is taken in the morning or early afternoon. Our NooBlue gummies are the closest match to the chewable format, with 10 mg of methylene blue per gummy.
If you are cutting back rather than quitting, our guide to methylene blue and caffeine covers how the two fit together, and our comparison of methylene blue vs modafinil explains why a prescription wakefulness drug is a different category altogether.
Citicoline vs. Methylene Blue: Two Routes to Caffeine-Free Focus
Look at the caffeine-free stacks on the shelf and one ingredient keeps appearing: citicoline, often as Cognizin. Mind Lab Pro builds around 250 mg of it, and NooCube uses VitaCholine for the same job. Both feed acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter tied to attention and learning. Methylene blue takes a different route. It does not supply a neurotransmitter building block. It supports the electron transport chain that powers brain cells.
The evidence differs too. Citicoline has a 12-week trial in 100 healthy older adults showing better episodic memory. Methylene blue has a single-dose brain-imaging trial in 26 healthy adults at a far higher dose than supplements provide. Neither stimulates the nervous system. If you want to combine routes, add one product at a time for two weeks so you can tell what is doing what, and check the methylene blue safety list first.
Safety: Who Should Skip Which Supplement
- Methylene blue: it is a reversible MAO-A inhibitor, and the injectable drug’s label warns of serotonin syndrome when it is combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors or opioids (injection label). Stimulant ADHD medicines are also off limits, it is not for people with G6PD deficiency, and it should not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Read our guide to methylene blue and serotonin syndrome.
- Stacks with huperzine A (Alpha BRAIN): huperzine A slows acetylcholine breakdown, so ask a doctor first if you take medicines that act on acetylcholine.
- Multi-ingredient stacks (Mind Lab Pro, NooCube): they combine several herbs and amino acids, so check the full label with a pharmacist if you take prescription medicines.
- Everyone: start one product at a time, and talk to your doctor before starting any supplement if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on prescription medication.
Our guide to methylene blue exclusions lists every group that should avoid it, and is methylene blue safe to take daily covers long-term use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best caffeine-free focus supplement?
Our pick is NooBlue Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules, which we make: 5 mg of USP-grade methylene blue and 10 mg of vitamin C per capsule for $0.63 a day, working on mitochondrial energy instead of neurotransmitters. If you prefer a multi-ingredient stack with a trial of the finished formula, Mind Lab Pro is the strongest option at $2.30 a serving. Methylene blue is not for anyone on serotonergic medicines.
Do caffeine-free nootropics actually work?
Some ingredients have real but modest evidence. Bacopa has a meta-analysis showing faster attention after 12 weeks or more, citicoline improved episodic memory in a 12-week trial of older adults, and Mind Lab Pro and Alpha BRAIN each have a positive trial of the finished formula. The effects are smaller and slower than caffeine’s, and several trials are small or funded by the brand.
What is a good Neuro gum alternative without caffeine?
Neuro Energy & Focus gum contains 40 mg of caffeine per piece, so any product on this list is a caffeine-free swap. For a chewable format, NooBlue methylene blue gummies give 10 mg of methylene blue per gummy. For a multi-ingredient stack, Mind Lab Pro and Alpha BRAIN are the two formulas here with published human trials. None of them gives caffeine’s quick lift.
Can I stack methylene blue with other nootropics?
Many people do, but add one product at a time for about two weeks so you can judge each. A common approach pairs a choline-based stack with a morning methylene blue capsule. Check every ingredient with a pharmacist if you take prescription medication, and never combine methylene blue with serotonergic antidepressants or stimulant ADHD medicines.
How long do caffeine-free nootropics take to work?
It depends on the ingredient. In trials, bacopa was taken for at least 12 weeks, citicoline for 12 weeks and Mind Lab Pro for 30 days. The methylene blue and lion’s mane studies measured effects one hour after a single dose, but those were small studies. Give any product at least two to four weeks before deciding.
Can I take a caffeine-free focus supplement in the afternoon?
Usually, yes. That is one practical advantage over caffeine. Mind Lab Pro suggests the morning or early afternoon, and Performance Lab Energy suggests the morning. Our capsules label says one capsule daily with food, and many customers take it in the morning or early afternoon.
What dose of methylene blue is best for focus?
No trial has set an ideal supplement dose. The one human brain-imaging trial used 280 mg once. Supplement servings are far lower: our capsules contain 5 mg, and we suggest one a day with food for two weeks before adjusting. Methylene blue has a hormetic dose response, so more is not better. Our guide to methylene blue dosage explains the reasoning.
Are there side effects of caffeine-free energy supplements?
Most are mild, such as stomach upset if taken without food. Methylene blue turns urine blue or green, which is harmless. Its serious risk is an interaction: it must not be combined with serotonergic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, opioids or stimulant ADHD medicines, and it is not for people with G6PD deficiency or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to a doctor if you take prescription medicines.
The Verdict
Our pick for caffeine-free focus is NooBlue Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules: a low, fixed 5 mg dose that supports mitochondrial energy, a published ingredient report, and a cost of $0.63 a day. For a multi-ingredient stack with a trial of the finished formula, Mind Lab Pro is the strongest alternative. Alpha BRAIN also has published trials of its formula, with mixed results, and Jarrow Acetyl L-Carnitine is the cheapest way to add a mitochondrial nutrient. Whatever you choose, check the safety list first and judge it over a few weeks.
