Key takeaways
- Yes, you can buy methylene blue over the counter in the US. Oral supplements (capsules, gummies, 1% drops and troches) are sold without a prescription and are easy to find online.
- Two versions need a prescription: the hospital injection (brand name ProvayBlue and its generics) and compounded capsules or solutions made by a pharmacy.
- Chemical, lab and aquarium grades are also sold openly. They are not made for people, so check that a product is sold as a supplement for oral use.
- Before you buy, check four things: the methylene blue dose per serving, what the lab report actually covers, the drop math on liquids, and whether the label carries the serotonergic-medicine warning.
- Do not take methylene blue with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or other serotonergic medicines, with G6PD deficiency, while pregnant or breastfeeding, or under 18. It can turn urine blue or green. If you take any prescription medicine, talk to your doctor first.
Search for methylene blue over the counter and you get a mix of supplement brands, pharmacy price-comparison pages, compounding pharmacies and bottles of lab dye. They are not the same product. This guide sorts out what you can buy without a prescription in 2026, where to buy it, which versions need a prescription, and how to check a bottle before it goes in your cart.
A note on who is writing: NooBlue sells methylene blue capsules, gummies and drops, so we have a commercial interest in this question. Our products are listed first where we compare channels, and every figure about another seller comes from that seller’s own page, checked in September 2026. More guides like this one sit in the NooBlue buying guides section of the blog.

Can You Buy Methylene Blue Over the Counter?
Yes. In the US, oral methylene blue supplements are sold without a prescription. You will find them on brand websites, on Amazon and on Walmart.com, in four main formats: capsules, gummies, 1% drops and dissolvable troches. On the products we checked, servings ranged from 0.5 mg (one drop of a 1% solution) to 16 mg (a whole troche).
What you cannot buy without a prescription is the injectable drug hospitals use, or a compounded version made by a pharmacy. And what you should not buy at all, for swallowing, is methylene blue sold as a stain, dye or aquarium product. Harvard Health Publishing warns that chemical-grade methylene blue sold as a stain or dye should not be used in humans, and that online buyers can end up with the wrong product entirely, such as fish tank cleaner (Harvard Health, 2025).
NooBlue makes all three of the formats below. They are our products, which is why they come first on this page. If none of the safety warnings further down applies to you, pick the one that suits your routine.
The Kinds of Methylene Blue Sold in the US
One molecule, methylthioninium chloride, is sold in very different forms. Knowing which one a search result is talking about clears up most of the confusion.
The prescription injection
Hospitals use an intravenous methylene blue injection for a small number of emergencies. The branded version, ProvayBlue, is a 5 mg/mL injection given at 1 mg/kg into a vein over 5 to 30 minutes, and its prescribing information marks it for prescription use only (ProvayBlue prescribing information). Generic versions exist too. This is the product a retail pharmacy counter means when it says methylene blue needs a prescription.
Compounded methylene blue
Some compounding pharmacies make oral methylene blue capsules or solutions to a prescriber’s instructions. ScripX Compounding Pharmacy, for example, says its methylene blue is “available by prescription only”, arranges the prescription through an online intake form and a telehealth consult, and starts at $40 (ScripX, checked September 2026). You get a custom dose and a pharmacist in the loop, at the cost of a consult and a wait.
Oral supplements
This is what most people mean by over-the-counter methylene blue: capsules, gummies, drops and troches sold by supplement brands for everyday focus and cellular energy. No prescription is needed. Quality varies by brand, which is why most of this guide is about checking a label.
Chemical, lab and aquarium grades
Methylene blue is also a lab stain and a fish-keeping product. Those bottles are sold openly, often at low prices, and are not made or tested for people to swallow. If a listing says “for external use only”, “not for human consumption” or “for research purposes only”, treat it as a chemical, not a supplement.
Where to Buy Methylene Blue Without a Prescription
The table below compares the main places you can buy methylene blue in the US. Prices are as of Sep 2026 and come from each seller’s own page.
| Channel | What you get | Prescription? | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| NooBlue, direct | Capsules (5 mg, 60 per bottle, $37.99), gummies (10 mg, 60 per bottle, $49.99) and 1% drops (50 ml, $29.99) | No | Our published lab report covers the raw ingredient only, so read its scope |
| Other supplement brands, direct | Drops, capsules, gummies and troches from many brands | No | Dose per serving, what any lab report covers, warnings on the label |
| Amazon and Walmart.com | Drops, capsules and gummies from many brands | No | Who the brand is, whether it has its own site with testing, and that the listing is a supplement rather than a stain |
| Troche brands, such as Troscriptions Just Blue | 16 mg troches, 4 per pack, $27 | No | Troches dissolve in the mouth and stain it blue |
| Compounding pharmacies, such as ScripX | Oral capsules or solutions made to a prescriber’s instructions, from $40 | Yes | Consult fee, turnaround time, total cost |
| Retail pharmacy counter | The generic methylene blue injection | Yes | Not an oral supplement |
| Lab, dye and aquarium suppliers | Stain or aquarium grade | No | Not made for people. Do not swallow. |
Direct from NooBlue
We sell three formats. The Ultimate Methylene Blue Capsules hold 5 mg of USP-grade methylene blue and 10 mg of vitamin C each, 60 to a bottle, one a day with food, which works out to $0.63 a serving. The Methylene Blue Gummies hold 10 mg each with 25 mg of vitamin C, 60 to a bottle, at $0.83 a gummy, and they avoid the blue mouth and tongue that drops cause. The Methylene Blue Drops are a 1% USP solution in a 50 ml bottle at 0.5 mg per drop, which comes to about 100 servings of 5 mg and $0.30 a serving. Shipping is free worldwide on orders of $100 or more, returns are accepted for 30 days, and orders dispatch in 1 to 2 business days with tracking. You can see everything in the NooBlue shop.
On testing, NooBlue publishes a report from Contract Testing Laboratories of America (CTLA) on its methylene blue ingredient, with an HPLC identity result and heavy metal results for one ingredient lot. It covers the raw ingredient, not each finished batch, and it does not state a purity percentage. We would rather you know that than read more into it.
Other brands, Amazon and Walmart.com
Plenty of other brands sell methylene blue direct, and many also sell through Amazon and Walmart.com. When we checked Walmart.com in September 2026, its methylene blue page showed 1% drops, capsules and gummies from several brands. Buying on a marketplace is convenient. The risk is that a marketplace search can mix supplements with bottles sold as stains or reagents, and a listing can be run by a reseller rather than the brand.
A simple rule works well here. Find the brand’s own website first. Check that it names the dose per serving, shows what its lab report covers, and prints the serotonergic-medicine warning. Then decide whether to buy there or from the brand’s own marketplace listing. Our comparison of the best over-the-counter methylene blue supplements does that check brand by brand, and our guide to testing whether methylene blue is real covers what to look at once a bottle arrives.
Troches
Troches are small tablets that dissolve slowly in the mouth. Troscriptions sells Just Blue as a 16 mg troche, 4 to a pack for $27, and describes a pack as up to 16 doses. Its page says the troche dissolves over 2 to 24 hours and will temporarily stain the mouth and teeth blue, and it warns against use with SSRIs, SNRIs or MAOIs without a healthcare provider, and against use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or G6PD deficiency (Troscriptions, checked September 2026). Our roundup of the best methylene blue troches compares the format in more detail.
Compounding pharmacies
If you want a dose no supplement offers, or you want a clinician involved from the start, a compounding pharmacy is the prescription route. Expect an intake form, a telehealth consult and a few days’ wait. ScripX quotes 2 to 6 business days after approval. Our guide on whether you need a prescription for methylene blue covers when this route makes sense.
Does Walgreens or CVS Sell Methylene Blue?
Their pharmacies can fill a prescription for it. The discount-card site ScriptSave WellRx lists generic methylene blue, the generic of ProvayBlue, as a prescription item at Walgreens, CVS and Walmart pharmacies. For one Michigan ZIP code in September 2026 it showed coupon prices of $102.59 at Walgreens, $105.19 at Walmart Pharmacy and $124.80 at CVS (WellRx). Prices vary by location, and this is the injectable, not an oral supplement.
Whether a particular store has an oral methylene blue supplement on its shelves changes by store and by month, and Walgreens’ website blocked our automated check, so we cannot confirm shelf stock. Check the store’s app for your local branch before you make the trip. If you want a specific format and dose, buying online is usually the simplest route. Our guide on finding methylene blue in health food stores and pharmacies goes through the in-store options.
What “USP Grade” and “Pharmaceutical Grade” Mean on a Label
“USP grade” refers to the United States Pharmacopeia monograph for methylene blue. It requires the material to contain 97.0% to 103.0% methylene blue, calculated on the dried basis, and sets further tests for identity and impurities (USP monograph). It is a standard for the raw ingredient. A brand that says “USP grade” is telling you which standard its ingredient is meant to meet, not that every bottle was tested against it.
“Pharmaceutical grade” has no single agreed definition on a supplement label. Brands use it loosely, so it tells you less than “USP grade” and much less than a lab report you can read. A purity percentage printed on a label is only as good as the document behind it. If a brand makes a purity claim, look for an assay result on a certificate of analysis that names the lab, the lot and the date. Our guides to methylene blue purity and reading a methylene blue certificate of analysis explain what to look for.
How to Check a Bottle Before You Buy
This takes a couple of minutes and filters out most bad buys.
- Is it sold for oral use? The listing should describe a supplement with a serving size. “External use only”, “not for human consumption” and “research purposes only” mean no.
- What is the methylene blue dose per serving? It should be printed in milligrams. A drop count alone is not enough.
- Does the drop math add up? A 1% solution holds 10 mg per ml. At the usual 20 drops per ml, that is 0.5 mg per drop, the figure NooBlue prints for its drops. A 1% label claiming several milligrams per drop does not add up.
- What does the lab report cover? Check whether it tests the raw ingredient or the finished product, whether it includes an assay (purity) result or only identity and heavy metals, and whether it names a lab, a lot number and a date.
- Is the warning on the label? A responsible brand warns against use with serotonergic medicines, in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and with G6PD deficiency.
- What else is in it? Some products add vitamin C, herbs or other actives. That is fine if you know about it, but it changes what you are taking.
- What is the cost per serving? Divide the price by the number of servings at the dose you plan to take, then compare.

Capsules, Gummies, Drops or Troches
All four formats are sold without a prescription. They differ in how precise the dose is, whether they stain, and how much you can adjust the amount.
| Format | Typical serving | Staining | Adjustable? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capsules | 5 mg per NooBlue capsule | None in the mouth, swallowed whole | In whole-capsule steps | A fixed daily amount with no taste |
| Gummies | 10 mg per NooBlue gummy | No blue mouth or tongue | No | An easy chewable routine |
| Drops (1%) | 0.5 mg per NooBlue drop | Stains the mouth, tongue and cups | In 0.5 mg steps | Fine control over the amount |
| Troches | 16 mg per Just Blue troche, which can be split | Stains the mouth and teeth | By splitting | People who want a dissolving format |
For a first bottle, capsules are the easiest to get right, because the dose is fixed and there is nothing to measure. Drops suit people who want to adjust the amount in small steps. Any format can turn urine blue or green, which is harmless. Our comparison of liquid and capsule methylene blue covers the differences in more depth, and our guide to methylene blue shelf life covers storage.
How Much Methylene Blue to Take
Start at the lowest serving on the label and keep to it. For NooBlue, a serving is one 5 mg capsule, one 10 mg gummy, or 10 drops (5 mg) of the 1% solution, once a day. Supplement servings are far below the doses used in research. The best-known human brain-imaging trial gave a single 280 mg dose, about 4 mg/kg, which is 56 times one 5 mg capsule. There is no good reason to take more than the label says.
Our guide to how many mg of methylene blue per day explains serving sizes by format, and why more is not better.
What the Research Says About Oral Methylene Blue
The most cited human trial is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study from the University of Texas. Twenty-six healthy adults aged 22 to 62 took a single oral dose of 280 mg (about 4 mg/kg) of USP-grade methylene blue or placebo. One hour later, brain scans showed stronger responses during attention and short-term memory tasks, and correct answers during memory retrieval rose by 7% (Rodriguez et al., Radiology, 2016). A 2017 follow-up from the same team used the same single 280 mg dose and found stronger resting-state connectivity between brain regions linked to perception and memory (Rodriguez et al., Brain Imaging and Behavior, 2017).
Those were single large doses in healthy volunteers, measured after one hour. No trial has tested daily supplement servings of 5 to 10 mg over weeks or months, so claims about long-term effects at those amounts go beyond the evidence. What is well documented is the chemistry. Methylene blue can accept and donate electrons, which is why it is studied as an extra electron carrier in mitochondria, and it is a potent, reversible inhibitor of the enzyme MAO-A (Ramsay et al., 2007). That second action is the reason for the interaction warning below. Our explainer on how methylene blue works goes through the mechanism.
Who Should Not Buy Methylene Blue
Buying without a prescription means nobody checks your medicines or health first. Run this check yourself before the first bottle.
- Anyone taking an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI or other serotonergic medicine. Methylene blue inhibits MAO-A, and combining it with serotonergic drugs can cause serotonin syndrome, a medical emergency. The ProvayBlue prescribing information carries a boxed warning about serious or fatal serotonin syndrome with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs and opioids. This includes common antidepressants such as sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram, venlafaxine and duloxetine, plus tramadol and St. John’s wort. See what not to take with methylene blue and methylene blue and serotonin syndrome.
- People with G6PD deficiency. Clinical references list G6PD deficiency as a contraindication because methylene blue can break down red blood cells in people with it (StatPearls, 2026). A blood test can check your status. Read methylene blue and G6PD deficiency.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take methylene blue while pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone under 18. NooBlue products are for adults.
- Anyone who takes a prescription medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start, even if your medicine is not named here.
Methylene blue can turn urine blue or green with any format, which clinical references describe as expected and benign. Our full list of who should not take methylene blue and our guide to methylene blue side effects cover what to expect and when to stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a prescription for methylene blue?
Not for oral supplements. Methylene blue capsules, gummies, drops and troches are sold without a prescription in the US. The injectable drug used in hospitals needs one, and so does compounded methylene blue made by a pharmacy. Buying without a prescription does not make it safe for everyone, so read the list of who should not take it first.
Why don’t doctors prescribe methylene blue?
In hospital medicine, methylene blue is mainly an injection for a few emergencies. Outside that, human research on everyday use is limited to small studies, and methylene blue interacts with SSRIs, SNRIs and other serotonergic medicines, which many patients already take. Some clinicians do prescribe compounded oral versions. Our article on why doctors rarely prescribe methylene blue covers this in detail.
Is it safe to take methylene blue orally?
For healthy adults who take no interacting medicines, the risks at supplement servings mostly come from the wrong product, the wrong dose or the wrong combination. In a 6-month crossover trial in 37 adults, with 195 mg a day for one phase, side effects were mild and short-lived (Alda et al., 2017). Blue or green urine is expected. It is not safe with serotonergic medicines, with G6PD deficiency, or in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and chemical or aquarium grades should never be swallowed.
Does Walgreens sell methylene blue?
Walgreens pharmacies can fill a prescription for the generic methylene blue injection, which a discount-card site listed at Walgreens in September 2026. We could not confirm oral supplement stock on Walgreens shelves because its site blocked our check. Look up your local store in the Walgreens app, or buy an oral supplement online.
Can I buy USP-grade methylene blue without a prescription?
Yes. Many supplement brands, including NooBlue, use USP-grade methylene blue in products sold without a prescription. The USP monograph requires 97.0% to 103.0% methylene blue on the dried basis. What needs a prescription is the finished injectable drug and compounded pharmacy products.
How long does a bottle of methylene blue last?
At one serving a day, a 60-capsule NooBlue bottle lasts 60 days, and so does a 60-gummy bottle. The 50 ml bottle of 1% drops gives about 100 servings of 5 mg. Store it cool, dry and away from light, and check the date on the bottle.
Where can I buy methylene blue in a store?
Stock of oral methylene blue in physical stores varies from store to store, and we could not verify any national chain that keeps it on the shelf. Call ahead or check the store’s app before you go. A pharmacy counter can fill a prescription for methylene blue, which is a different product from an oral supplement.
What does “not for human consumption” mean on a methylene blue bottle?
It means the seller is selling a chemical, not a supplement. These bottles are sold as stain, lab or aquarium stock. They come with a safety data sheet for handling rather than a serving size, and nothing on them says the product meets a standard for oral use. “For external use only” and “for research purposes only” read the same way. No price or star rating turns one of these into an oral product.
Is methylene blue on Amazon real?
Amazon carries methylene blue supplements from brands that also sell on their own websites, alongside resellers and listings that are harder to trace. Start from the brand’s own site, check its dose, lab report and warnings, then buy from the brand directly or from its own marketplace storefront. Once a bottle arrives, our guide to testing whether methylene blue is real shows what to look at.
The Bottom Line
Oral methylene blue is easy to buy over the counter in the US, in capsules, gummies, drops and troches. The versions that need a prescription are the hospital injection and compounded pharmacy products. The real work is picking a product made for people, with a clear dose per serving, a lab report you can read and an honest label warning.
If none of the safety warnings applies to you, a fixed 5 mg capsule is the simplest way to start. NooBlue makes it, and it is our pick for a first bottle.
